Drawing from my own personal experiences raising children with an incarcerated parent, I founded Borderland, an organization centered on helping women navigate the prison and the “free world.” For women navigating these spaces, the borderlands between weekend visits and weekday lives, the margins between these two worlds are proof that the world outside of prison is not free. Mothers raising children with an incarcerated parent exist in the borderlands as “Mainline Mamas” --mothers navigating the borderlands of prisons and everyday life outside those institutions as we raise our children and maintain a link to an incarcerated loved one.
